Looking for cocktails…try Halyards

Where can you get a fancy cocktail without paying ‘fancy’ prices?

Halyards of course!

With laid back atmosphere and drinks like these…

…Halyards is one of the coolest bars in Brooklyn. Upon entering you are transported into a speak-easy like atmosphere with a beautiful wooden bar and gorgeous wooden tables. The main room is very open with high ceilings and has plenty of places to sit. If you are looking for an area that’s more intimate to sip your cocktail, than just head to the booths and small tables tucked in the back.

Not too sure about what cocktail you’d like to drink? Well, don’t worry, the bartenders here are super friendly and will walk you through the delicious cocktail list. (they also have beer on tap too.)

Expect intellectual conversation from the crowd of visual artists, writers, musicians, and local true Brooklynites who frequent this bohemian bar.

Halyards has some badass events too! On Sunday they show Dexter and Empire Boardwalk; Wednesday’s game night: pool, darts, and Jenga with a chance to win drinks and cash; Thursday’s vegan night with chef Emma Gonzalez; And on Saturday New Orleans-style jazz with Shake the Devil Off and food by Tchoup Shop.

The place is almost too good to be true!
We’d like to thank Halyards for being a place for artist to hang out and for supporting this years Gowanus Open Studio

Gowanus Studio Space

So, you’re an artist and you need like a million things to create your art. What do you do? Well, Gowanus Studio Space is a home for artists that need… everything. The Gowanus Studio Space has a printshop, digital print lab, and Wood Shop / Fab Shop. They also have crazy workshops/events! Like early this year: they built kayaks from virtually nothing; hosted second annual VENT Festival that featured artists exploring personal and cultural histories through performative gesture; built a Trajinera, which is is a Pre-Hispanic Mexican Barge, and then used that same barge to have on the water conversation on Mexican migration with journalist Eduardo Porter. Crazy awesome!

Get the 311 on their membership packages on their site.

And be sure to check back frequently to see what’s next for these crafty arty engineering folks!

Angry Wade’s

Smith Street just wouldn’t be Smith Street without Angry Wade’s. Aside from having a variety of beer and liquor, Angry Wade’s has three things that make it perfect place to go.

One: it has a pool table. So, after a long day of creating art you can get a little RN’R time in by shooting some pool!

Two: it’s got nice giant TVs. If you need to catch your favorite sports team or need a place to glare at other sports teams you hate… they have TVs that are visible from basically every part of the bar.

Finally, they have FREE POPCORN! Who doesn’t like popcorn and beer? no, really who doesn’t? Popcorn is just so good when havin’ a pint!

We’d like the thank Angry Wade’s for supporting artist and this years Open Studio Tours.

Gowanus: Live Here / Work Here

After you stroll through this amazing industrialize bohemian neighborhood for the Open Studio tour you’ll want to live and work here. Not suprisingly finding a space for both can be…well…trying at times. That’s why you’ll need the help of Maserati Realty BMA Management. They offer Brooklyn commercial and residential real estate both to buy or to rent. They’ll find you just the right place, so you can be a part of this amazing artists friendly neighborhood!

The work of Maria Jimenez

The focus of my work is to represent Dominican culture through Taínos, which are an indigenous group of indians existing prior to 1662. The Dominican Republic is a mixture of many cultures including but not exclusive of Europeans, Africans and Indians. My work is a culmination of all these cultures painted and drawn in a representational manner in a modern genre context. My work includes still life of faceless porcelain figures created by Dominican craftsmen symbolizing Dominican women who are often overlooked. I like to paint prehistoric artifacts as well as petroglyphs and portraits symbolizing who we are and how we have evolved as a people. I like to tackle this theme which is much in line with Frida Kahlo as I also explore my own indigenous heritage and perhaps help others become aware of their own.                                                                                             –Maria

Brooklyn Artist Gym

The Brooklyn Artist Gym (BAG) is not only one of the galleries for this year’s Gowanus Open Studio, it’s also a space for cultivating artist! BAG’s offers programs and classes for both up & coming and veteran artists. They can teach you how to go from making your art to putting it up on exhibit. They can help you hone in on your skills or teach you something completely new. Their classes include: figure drawing, oil painting, photoshop for artist, quilt block work, screen printing, business for creatives, and more! BAG also offers a 850 sq. ft. rental gallery space, which is perfect for hosting up to 75 guests. It’s an amazing place that builds an artistic community, while still allowing the privacy for individual artist to create.

The religion of beer, Mission Dolores

Everyone knows Brooklyn loves beer! That’s why it’s no surprise that Mission Dolores is one of the best bars in Brooklyn.

With 20 craft style beers on tap and a very unique rustic looking full bar, this place is a beer lovers heaven! Sure you can get craft beers at other Brooklyn bars, but not with a variety like this. The taps change daily and are posted on their blog here… brews like: Barrier Craven Belgian Red, Bear Republic Monkey High Five, Dogfish Head Punkin’ Ale, Mikkeller Beergeek Breakfast (this is so amazing!), all make an appearance. We’re getting thirsty just thinking about it!

The layout of Mission Dolores has a uniqueness all its own. It has this whole inside / outside thing going on.

To enter Mission Dolores you go through their outdoor space which has interesting ‘industrial revolution’ style wood & metal hardware and exposed brick lining the walls. Comfortable chairs & a long bench provide perfect seating for hardy drinking underneath the beautiful Brooklyn sky!

At the middle of the bar you’ll find huge glass doors that curl over into skylights for the inside space. Once inside you’ll see why some call this their ‘sanctuary’… for at the back, like an alter, sits a big wooden bar with so many taps it will blow your mind.

Only after that first sip of beer will you notice the mural art, enlarged mug shots, and exposed wood that covers the inside walls. For you nerds out there (we are nerds too btw) Mission Dolores has a Lord of the Rings pinball machines; talk about magical! We really can’t get enough of this place! This weekend try at least two beers from their taps that you have never had before and report back to us on their goodness.

A very big thank you to Mission Dolores for supporting the 2011 Gowanus Open Studios (AGAST).
